College Open Textbooks is funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and is made up of colleges, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations and other education-related organizations that are committed to raising awareness about the inflated cost of college textbooks and dedicated to promoting open source textbooks. They do this by providing training to college instructors who wish to adopt these sources, providing peer review services, and supporting authors who wish to open their resources. Clearly, students and faculty want open textbooks that are easy to access and use, have editing capabilities so instructors can customize content, are compatible across platforms, and may be marked up and printed.
