The Purdue University North Central Campus Shop is planning to expand their rental options to include over half of their textbooks for the upcoming summer semesters. Out of 165 textbooks, 76 will be eligible for students to rent. The bookstore has offered rental textbooks before, but they have never covered this many titles.

Since the beginning of the 2010 fall semester, the Follett Higher Education Group has offered students a Rent-a-Text program through the Campus Shop. The rental program was initiated to make higher education more affordable at the North Central campus by providing a cheaper alternative to expensive textbooks. Students who chose to use the rental textbooks saved around 50 percent compared to new textbook prices.

In the 2011-2012 academic year, the Campus Shop rented out approximately 4,700 rental textbooks to students with a total savings of $257,788.
