Textbooks.com, an online textbooks retailer, has recently performed a customer survey in order to understand college students’ textbook buying habits. The results showed that the majority of students found new textbooks to be too expensive and 91% claimed to have saved money when purchasing used textbooks. Out of the survey responses, 60% of students preferred to buy used textbooks, followed by rental (24%), new (9%), and digital textbooks (7%).
In addition, the survey asked students about their upcoming fall semester purchasing habits and they almost completely ruled out new textbooks:
- 39% plan to purchase used textbooks
- 30% plan to rent textbooks
- 28% plan to purchase digital eTextbooks
- 3% plan to purchase new textbooks
